Safety Tips for Driving in Severe Winter Conditions

By Chris Robinson

If this is your first time to drive during severe winter conditions, extra precautions need to be taken.  New drivers are more susceptible to injury during a mishap than most seasoned drivers.

Whether you are a new or experienced driver, the inherent weather climate can pose the same problems for everyone.  The following tips can help insure that you arrive at your destination safely:

·        Drivers should always clear snow from their cars. To prevent snow from blowing up off of the hood or down from the roof to block visibility, a complete snow removal habit should be established.

·        Clean the glass inside your car to remove fingerprints and smoke film.  Make sure the defroster, heater, and fan are operational.

·        Check the tires for excessive wear.  Driving with bald tires on any surface, especially snow and ice, is an extreme hazard.

·        Take a few minutes to check your vehicle tires early in the fall. If they need to be replaced, do so before winter arrives.

·        An often-overlooked winter safety hazard is stress. Rushing out five minutes late for work may make you hours, days, or weeks late if you are involved in an injury-causing mishap.

·        Drive slower and allow extra time when planning to travel for long distances.

·        When an aggressive driver raises your blood pressure, the safest response is to stay calm.

You can increase the odds for safe winter driving by recognizing the hazards and following the tips above.
